The Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES) is an interdisciplinary centre of excellence dedicated to the study of contemporary Europe, the European Union, and its member states. Based at the University of Amsterdam, ACES brings together researchers working across disciplines who share an interest in Europe’s political, economic, legal, and societal transformations.

ACES has been awarded a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence grant under the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme, recognising the centre’s contribution to research, teaching, and public debate on European integration.

Five Theme Groups

Research at ACES is organised through five Theme Groups:

  • Tech, Power, and Policy (please add the hyperlink to the group’s affiliates), focusing on digital transformation, regulation, and strategic autonomy
  • Contested Economic Challenges, examining conflict, governance, and regulation in European political economies
  • Climate Dissensus in Europe, analysing climate governance and the integration of dissenting voices
  • The Future of European Democracy, addressing democratic backsliding, populism, and political participation
  • Europe in the World, exploring Europe’s global role, history, and international connections

The Theme Groups provide space for collaboration and exchange, both separately and together, and serve as platforms for joint research, public engagement, and interdisciplinary dialogue.

Membership information

ACES membership is open to researchers affiliated with the University of Amsterdam. Whether your work focuses on Europe from a local, national, or global perspective, ACES offers a supportive and intellectually ambitious research community.

ACES membership offers access to seed funding, including the current open call for small research support of up to €5,000, support for organising events, and a platform for exchange with colleagues working on Europe across disciplines.
