Asli Unan is an Assistant Professor of European Political Economy in the European Studies Department at the University of Amsterdam. Before joining this position, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Comparative Political Behavior at Humboldt University of Berlin. Asli obtained her PhD in Political Economy from King's College London, focusing on the dynamics of policy-making, particularly policy reversals and their connection to transboundary crises. She is also affiliated with Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES) as theme leader and Humboldt-Governance Lab as researcher.
Her research centers on understanding how transboundary crises shape people's attitudes and behavior and affect policies. She studies the dynamics of attitude and policy position changes among political elites and citizens, specifically on multilayered policy issues such as immigration and climate change. Asli examines ways to build broad public support for these often costly policies and investigates potential (mis)alignments in these positions. She specializes in causal methods, large-scale data analysis, and experimental research. Her geographical interest lies in Europe and the MENA region. Asli is a regular co-author of internationally peer-reviewed journal articles in political science and political economy, and her work has been featured in journals such as the British Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, European Journal of Political Research, and Political Behavior among others.
