ACES Call for Proposals are now open

Small-scale Research Support

ACES is delighted to announce that the 2025 funding calls are now open for ACES affiliates. Each year, ACES offers a range of funding opportunities to support affiliates’ research activities. This support is separate from the workshops, seminars, and outreach events organised by ACES Theme Groups. Maximum funding of the grant is €2.500.

ACES welcomes proposals for research support from any ACES affiliate employed at the University of Amsterdam, including postdoctoral and PhD researchers. We particularly encourage proposals from early-career scholars active within ACES. Proposals may be submitted for the following types of research support:

Small-Scale Research Support

Funding can be requested to advance research related to European or European Union studies, ideally (but not necessarily) interdisciplinary and preferably linked to one or more of ACES’s five Research Themes (see Theme Groups). Funds may be used for travel, material support, or research assistance.

Please note

Proposals are reviewed on a rolling basis, meaning each submission is assessed as it is received, rather than after a fixed deadline. Early applications are therefore encouraged.
All funding must be spent within the 2025 calendar year. Activities planned for 2026 will not be eligible under this call and will be part of a separate funding round.

Terms and conditions

Funding

Maximum funding for the grant is € 2.500. Funding requested should be proportional to the objectives and projected output. The selection committee reserves the right to award less than the amount requested.

Applicant Eligibility

Research support grants are available to ACES affiliates currently employed at the University of Amsterdam (including PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers). Proposals that combine applying for a major grant with conducting research activities leading to publications are also accepted.

Activity Eligibility

Grants may be used for a combination of various purposes, including but not limited to:

hiring a research assistant for (quantitative or qualitative) data collection – which may include doing field work outside the Netherlands - data analysis, interview transcription or translation, and joint publications.
purchasing data sets and/or software.
organising or attending a scientific conference/workshop.
doing fieldwork, and data-gathering.

Please note:

ACES research support cannot cover: teaching buyouts, editing or publication costs.
Successful applicants will be expected to report on the results achieved and to acknowledge ACES support explicitly in any publications resulting from the grant.
Successful applicants will receive the grant guidelines detailing the eligibility of costs, instructions on hiring research assistance, and information on types of contacts, among other key details.
The grant must be spent in the calendar year 2025.

Proposal guidelines

Proposals (in a few pages) should include:

the objective to which the proposed activities shall contribute
a brief activity plan (in terms of form of activities, and their timing and place).
a budget.
expected output and outcomes.
a CV of the applicant.

Selection criteria and procedure

Proposals will be assessed and selected on the basis of the following criteria:

the contribution to ACES’ mission.
the added value to the applicant’s own research.
the quality and feasibility of the proposal.

In case of equal quality, we prioritise proposals of ACES members that have not yet received ACES fundings in previous calls.

Review and selection of applications shall be carried out by a committee of the ACES Governing Board (Brian Burgoon (FMG), Theresa Kuhn (FGW), Ans Kolk (FEB) and Kristina Irion (FDR) plus a representative from each of the five ACES Theme Groups.

Deadline

Proposals should be sent no later than 23:59 on August 14, 2025 to aces@uva.nl with ‘Application for ACES research support’ in the subject line.
