Professor Theresa Kuhn has been appointed as the new Director of the Amsterdam Center for European Studies (ACES), effective September 1st, 2024. She succeeds Professor Luiza Bialasiewicz, who will continue her role as Professor of Political and Economic Geography in the Department of Economics at Ca' Foscari University of Venice.

We are delighted to welcome Professor Theresa Kuhn as the new Director of ACES, next to Professor Brian Burgoon, effective September 1st, 2024. Prior to this appointment, Professor Kuhn was an active member of the ACES community, serving as one of the leaders of the Politics and Publics Theme Group and as Director of the faculty-wide research priority area of ACES from 2019 to 2022. She is currently a Full Professor and Chair of Modern European History and Politics in the Department of European Studies at the University of Amsterdam.

European integration and globalisation on everyday life

Professor Kuhn’s research explores the impact of European integration and globalisation on everyday life, focusing on how individuals respond to these transformations in their political attitudes and identities. Her extensive research covers key issues in European politics, including nationalism, Euroscepticism, corruption, and rising inequality. In addition, she leads the five-year research project "EUDENTIFY," funded by a VIDI grant from the Dutch Research Council. This project examines the relationship between European institution-building and identity formation.

Best Book in Contemporary European Studies Award

As a prolific scholar, Professor Kuhn has authored numerous influential publications, including her widely acclaimed monograph, Experiencing European Integration: Transnational Lives and European Identity (Oxford University Press, 2015). This work earned her the Best Book in Contemporary European Studies Award in 2016. Her contributions to the field have also been recognized with several prestigious honors, including the CES Carolina de Miguel Moyer Young Scholar Award in 2022, which celebrates significant interdisciplinary contributions to the study of Europe by a scholar under the age of 40.

Gratitude to Luiza Bialasiewicz

With her extensive expertise in European affairs and her proven leadership within the academic community, Professor Kuhn is exceptionally well-positioned to guide ACES into its next chapter alongside Professor Brian Burgoon. We are excited to welcome her as our new Academic Director and look forward to the continued success of the center under her leadership.

We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Professor Luiza Bialasiewicz for her remarkable contributions and commitment to ACES over the past few years. Her leadership has been crucial in guiding the center and shaping its success.

Sincerely,
