The unpublished research is co-authored with Stephen Chaudoin of Harvard University and Kevin Troy of Anthropic.

Nita Rudra shall argue that such shocks erode the meritocratic foundations of political economies in industrialized democracies, such as in the US, generating cross-partisan support for social investment in education and job training, but not for social assistance. When globalization is perceived as unfairly displacing working-class families, conservatives come to view them as deserving of government support to restore meritocracy through training and education assistance.

Building on extensive data, including two pre-registered survey datasets fielded in the US, the paper and talk identify key conditions under which conservative redistribution preferences shift, suggesting that partisan divides over social investment may be more malleable than the literature has assumed.
