EU–Middle East relations are multifaceted, varied and complex, shaped by historical, political, economic, migratory, social and cultural dynamics. Covering these relations from a broad perspective that captures continuities, ruptures and entanglements, this Handbook provides a clearer understanding of trends, thus contributing to a range of different turns in international relations. The volume offers original reflections on historical constructions; theoretical approaches; multilateralism and geopolitical perspectives; contemporary issues; peace, security and conflict; and development, economics, trade and society.
About the series
These events are organized by the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES) in cooperation with the EUMENIA Jean Monnet Network, Roskilde University and the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI). They are also supported by the Amsterdam Centre for Middle Eastern Studies (ACMES), the European International Studies Association (EISA), the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) and the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center.

Andrea Teti & Gennaro Gervasio analyze perceptions of the EU from the activists’ point of view and public opinion in the ME. Ayhan Kaya analyses populist politics in Europe and their impact on EU-Turkey relations. Concluding, Annette Jünemann analyses the changing gender relations in the MENA region.

The fourth event, held in cooperation with Carnegie Middle East, zooms in peace and security issues, by analyzing the EU’s attitude vis-a-vis some of the most complex conflicts and crises in the Middle East.

Development, Economics, Trade and Societal Issues
Routledge Handbook of EU-Middle East Relations #5
The fifth event focuses on trade, military and humanitarian relations between the EU and the MENA region. Emile Badarin & Jeremy Wildeman start by analyzing EU development aid in the Middle East. Beste İşleyen and Tamirace Fakhoury then move on to the politics of borders and migration, while Emma Murphy examines the relationship between the EU and youth. Finally, Nora Aboushady and Chahir Zaki assess trade relations, patterns, policies and imbalances.
